Ten years with the Sultan

Rajiv began his journey with Basheer over ten years ago, with the staging of ‘Moonshine and Skytoffee’ in 2004. The play was rehearsed and performed at the Alliance Francaise of Madras. So its quite appropriate that we come back to the Alliance with ‘Under the Mangosteen Tree’ ten years later. Since we’re on a bit of a nostalgia trip, we thought we’d share some photos that we dug up from the shows in 2004. Aparna, Dayal, Bala, Hans, Jagan, Babu, Taruna, and Gayatri on stage and many, many friends and familiar faces in the audience. There is in fact one audience member who is now part of the Basheer journey. Can you spot him?

Under the Mangosteen Tree, a play in English, based on the stories of Vaikom Muhammad Basheer, will be performed on April 18th and 19th at 7pm at Adishakti, Pondicherry, and at The Alliance Francaise of Madras on April 25 and 26, 2015 at 3.30 pm and 7.30 pm on both days. Tickets for the Madras shows are priced at Rs. 200 and available at www.eventjini.com and www.bookmyshow.com or call our tele-booking number at 9445961425. Formerly known as Sangathi Arinhya! (Have you heard!), the play has performed 49 shows across 9 cities.

First show at Adishakti

Here are some photos taken by John Mathew from the first show at Adishakti. We had a lovely packed audience at the theatre and hope to see many more people today.

Remembering Veenapani

We’ve come to the Adishakti Theatre in Pondicherry to perform Under the Mangosteen Tree as part of a month long festival remembering its founder Veenapani Chawla. Over the last two days we’ve been rehearsing and setting up for the show helped by some wonderful people here at Adishakti – Vinay, Arvind, Nimmy, Anoop, and Bhavin. We’re getting geared up for our first show this evening at 7pm, here are some photos from our set up – some people hard at work, and others, well…

The space – Jagriti Theatre

We’ve now been at Jagriti, Whitefield for over ten days – rehearsing and performing in the intimate theatre, and cooking, feasting and living in the spacious apartment in the same compound. It has been a wonderful experience. Here are some lovely sketches of the theatre by Kalpana Balaji, and John Mathew’s photographs of some of the people who have made our stay and work here so comfortable and fun.

Creating together

“The aim of creation itself is to struggle for existence, and not to sit idle.” (Vaikom Muhammad Basheer in the film Basheer the Man by MA Rahman)

Fathima Bi

“When you write a book , imagine a story, to get the beauty of it, the flavour, the happiness, the joy, you need to act it out. That was Basheer.” (Fathima Bi, who married Vaikom Muhammad Basheer when he was 50 years old)

The human creatures of Kaduvakkuzhi

But for me you are still a great mystery. I don’t know if I really understood you. I tried. But one thing is sure, I loved you.
